Urushi Section - selected. I described morning glories blooming vigorously in the summer morning. First, the surface was coated with white colored urushi. Then, the morning glory pattern was carved with fine lines, filled with light blue colored urushi, and polished flat (Kinma technique). After that, about 40 layers of colored urushi were applied, creating a layer of urushi about 2 mm thick. This left the outlines of the flowers and leaves, and the rest was carved down to the white background layer. The flowers were carved three-dimensionally so that the light blue and white layers appeared (Choshitsu technique). Because it is difficult to carve down the Choshitsu part without damaging the white background layer, I have never seen a work that combines this technique before. I wanted to try whether it was technically possible, so I made this with a sense of challenge. It was difficult, but I succeeded in it. The part that receives the lid and the rim on the back side are made of wood. |
