The lowest layer consists of five coats of green, followed by layers of white lacquer with yellow and red interposed between them. After that, a gradient from light blue to deep blue was applied, and finally ten coats of black were added. In total, fifty-five layers of lacquer were built up before carving. The hydrangeas are arranged to create a sense of rhythm, capturing the flowers in their light and graceful bloom, while the sides are engraved with the serene scene of a gentle, quiet rainfall. The outlines of the hydrangeas are embellished with chinkin (gold-inlay engraving). |
