I described morning glories blooming vigorously in the summer morning.
First, the surface was coated with white colored urushi. Then, the morning glory pattern was carved with fine lines, filled with light blue colored urushi, and polished flat (Kinma technique).
After that, about 40 layers of colored urushi were applied, creating a layer of urushi about 2 mm thick. This left the outlines of the flowers and leaves, and the rest was carved down to the white background layer. The flowers were carved three-dimensionally so that the light blue and white layers appeared (Choshitsu technique).
Because it is difficult to carve down the Choshitsu part without damaging the white background layer, I have never seen a work that combines this technique before. I wanted to try whether it was technically possible, so I made this with a sense of challenge. It was difficult, but I succeeded in it.
The part that receives the lid and the rim on the back side are made of wood.
Process
  1. The surface was coated 10 times with white colored urushi.
  2. It was carved with fine lines in the design of morning glory leaves.
  3. The carved grooves were filled in several times with light blue colored urushi.
  4. It was polished flat with a whetstone and a charcoal. (the end of Kinma technique)
  5. The surface was coated with urushi in the following order:
    White 10 layers
    Yellowish green 1 layer
    White 5 layers
    Light blue 5 layers
    White 1 layer
    Light blue 5 layers
    White 5 layers
    Black 5 layers
  6. The layer left the outline of the morning glory, and the others were carved and shaved down to the white layer on the background.
  7. The flower part was carved three-dimensionally, and the light blue and white layers were exposed.
  8. The carved part was sharpened with a whetstone and a charcoal.
  9. The whole was polished together.
